County of Barrhead is participating in a provincial pilot project to allow golf carts on roadways in specific subdivisions in the County.  Details about this program can be found in Golf Cart Pilot Project Bylaw 3-2025.
 
Golf Cart Permits:
Applicants to the program must submit a Golf Cart Permit Application and meet all criteria outlined in the application form. Submit completed applications to cpo@countybarrhead.ab.ca, or drop them off in-person at the County office.
 
Application fees are $50 for a first-time application, and $25 for annual renewals. Payment can be made in person via cash, cheque, or debit, or by e-transfer to payments@countybarrhead.ab.ca.  

Designated Roads:
Golf carts can only be operated on designated roadways within the subdivisions of Thunder Lake, Idle Hours, Greendale, Whiterock Beach, & Murray's Beach, as shown in green on the maps below (click the maps for more detail).
 
What you need to know about the new bylaw:

County of Barrhead has enacted a bylaw to regulate operation, regulation, and control of vehicles on highways and municipal lands within the County.

  1. Participating municipalities can permit golf carts to operate on designated highways identified by signage with a maximum posted speed limit of 50 km/h or less.
  2. Golf carts can only be operated on these designated highways.
  3. Municipality must provide a permit system for golf carts operating on these highways.
  4. Municipality must report the following information annually to the Registrar:
    • Golf cart make, model, number of seats, fuel source, and vehicle equipment such as headlamps, signal, and brake lights.
    • Number and age of operators.
    • Intended frequency of use.
    • Proof of a minimum of $2 million liability insurance coverage.
  • Golf carts must be operated in accordance with the Traffic Safety Act, its regulations, and this bylaw.
  • Operators must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Golf carts can only be driven on designated highways.
  • Operators must have a valid permit for the golf cart.
  • Golf carts must comply with all permit terms and conditions.
  • Operators must drive with due care and attention, show reasonable consideration for others, not overload the golf cart, not tow anyone, and not attach any equipment or trailer to the golf cart.
When approaching an oncoming vehicle, pass on the right.
  • Yield to vehicles approaching from the right.
  • When overtaking another vehicle, pass on the left.
  • Yield to pedestrians to avoid hazards.
  • Maintain a safe following distance behind other vehicles, except when overtaking.
