On March 12, 2021 Highway 2 Conservation, a sustainable agriculture and conservation organization that the County of Barrhead is a member of, completed a bat protection initiative.
Two 4-chamber nursery bat houses were placed, with the help of FortisAlberta, in an ideal location to encourage bat habitats near Gardenview. The location offers immediate proximity to a large wetland for foraging. The absence of natural roosting sites at this location resulted in this site being an exemplary placement for bat houses.
Our hope is that the bat houses provide a roosting site for over 200 bats to raise their young during the summer months.
FortisAlberta generously donated the pole that the houses are attached to. In addition, two FortisAlberta employees lifted the pole that encompasses the bat houses and put it in place with their equipment.
Erecting bat houses was a new task to them; however, they did an excellent job. Their efforts and eagerness to participate with this project is greatly appreciated.
