Prevent Rural Crime!
Prevent Rural Crime!
Protect your farm from being a target!
Many aspects of rural crime prevention may seem like common sense, but it's all about:
- Staying vigilant, and
- Making security a habit
Fencing & Gates
- Regularly check boundary fences to ensure they’re in good condition.
- Gates should be strong, mounted securely to corner posts and locked with heavy duty chains & padlocks.
Deter Trespassers
- Place "no trespassing” & "private property” signs around the perimeter of the property.
- Put up signs warning that equipment is marked and the property has alarms and security cameras (if applicable).
Sheds & Outbuildings
- Where possible, position sheds where they can be seen from the house.
- Build sheds from strong materials, with heavy duty roller doors or metal gates & good-quality padlocks.
- Consider installing sensor lights & security alarms.
SECURE YOUR EQUIPMENT
Machinery & Equipment
- Store machinery in a locked shed. If that’s not possible, group it together outside and ensure it can be seen from your house.
- Lock all machinery when not in use, including cab doors; remove the keys and keep them with you.
Tools
- Store any valuable equipment that can be quickly and easily loaded onto a truck in a locked shed (like power tools, generators, fencing materials, motorbikes).
- Lock away tools to prevent thieves being able to use them to force open locked sheds, gun safes, or other storage areas.
Fuel Tanks
- Lock your fuel tank with a strong padlock, ideally at the cut-off valve.
- Where possible, place your tanks where they can be seen from the house, but are out of sight from the road.
Keep Good Records
- Keep an inventory with a description, a record of serial & model numbers, and photos. Keep invoices & receipts to help with identification.
- Engrave or mark your equipment with a unique number (like your driver’s license number).
Report farm crime! Every time!
Sometimes, farmers don't report thefts because if feels like a small matter, or that police can't do much about it.
If you become aware that you've had fuel, farm equipment, or other property stolen, call police immediately to report it. The sooner you report it, the better chance they can catch the offender.
Even if a thief is not caught right away, reporting allows RCMP to track crime trends and adjust policing strategies.
For emergencies, call 911. To report non-urgent farm crime in the Barrhead area, call 780-674-4848.
