Geography

The County of Barrhead's geography features three major rivers:
the Athabasca river, Paddle river, and Pembina river.
The Athabasca river borders the northwest portion of the County,
and features pristine boreal forest and unique sand hill formations.
The northern part of the county features excellent farm land in
the Neerlandia and Naples area. A variety of crops and livestock
are produced from this region of the county.
The Paddle river meanders through the southwest portion of the County
of Barrhead. It intersects the Town of Barrhead, and acts as the
Town's major water source. It flows from the town and meets with
the Pembina river just east of the Town of Barrhead in the Manola
area. The southern parts of the county feature gently rolling hills
and excellent pasture lands. We have 3 main recreational lakes, as
well as many small water bodies and lakes through the area.
This
vast array of geographical mixes makes for a terrific array of
recreational opportunities, offering fishing, swimming, boating,
water skiing, hunting, skidooing and quading, wildlife watching,
hiking, almost anything you can imagine.
Conservation
of resources is an important goal of the County of Barrhead. We
work
with numerous residents and organizations to conserve areas of
woodlands and forest, to maintain wildlife and soil conservatism.
A number of sloughs and ponds are designated nesting sites by Duck
Unlimited.
